Magician Brand Archetype
What do all good Magicians have in common?
They create amazement and wonder. They leave people thinking, “How in the world did they do that? I am blown away!” That is exactly the persona the Magician Archetype embodies. Magicians are compelling and charismatic. They offer change and transformation through the product or service they sell.
Magicians are very wise, with a vast knowledge base that is essential for the “miracles” they perform. Dreamy clients call on Magicians with problems, questions, or even a goal they feel is unattainable and need support on. The Magician uses their strong problem-solving skills to build the necessary bridges to close the gaps. The result? The Magician leaves people believing there was truly magic involved.
Magicians are strategists. This element draws others in -- think of the Magician as an idea-driven powerhouse! Everyone has that friend that they go to when they need new ideas. Someone who can think outside the box and offer an alternative perspective. That friend probably has some characteristics of a Magician.
Magicians typically have a spiritual element to them. They form strong relationships and at times wear many different hats. Mentor, coach, confidant, and healer. This, coupled with their transformative outputs, gives them large and strong networks. There is an innate ability for the Magician to contain and channel power. However, this can be a hurdle for them. It can sometimes be difficult for others to fully grasp the result or transformation they promise. Makes sense right? For those who are less risk averse, it can be scary to trust the way the Magician works.
Now let’s put the Magician archetype into a brand perspective. There are a few standout companies that embody the Magician Archetype. The most prominent one is Disney. I mean, come on, everything about Disney is magical. The characters, the movies, the amusement parks, heck even the Disney store at the mall! Disney sparks the imagination. They have the ability to make everyone feel like a kid again. It’s like Disney is transporting us to an alternate reality. A place to escape the day-to-day. And for us exhausted parents, putting on a show on Disney for our kids to watch is its own form of magic! Disney is there for us every step of the way and they bring us along their journey! The company has fully leaned into that as their archetype. They hook people in by showcasing amazement and wonder.
Another strong Magician brand is Dyson. I am sure many people will remember when Dyson came out with their filter-less vacuum. Dyson claimed it was “the first vacuum that doesn’t lose suction.” I was given one for a wedding gift and couldn’t stop talking about it. How could it not lose suction? Why does it work so well? Why am I obsessed with a vacuum?! Seems too good to be true. Dyson took a frequently felt problem and re-invented a solution. The filter-less vacuum was a totally out-of-the-box idea! They created such a buzz in the community from a single product. Why? It was transformative! And people bought right into it, me included.
